Crypton Tuning - Rolling Road

baydetail

We use Crypton diagnostic equipment to keep the modern and classic vehicle in tune .We also check for fault codes and M.O.T gas emissions levels. This, in itself, helps to keep the cost of running most cars to a minimum and performance to a maximum.

OK - so you've got used to driving your car and you crave more power but we all know that engine tuning can be expensive, so maybe you've added a new air filter and exhaust system which have cost a small fortune but can you feel the difference? Maybe you can if you're lucky, but maybe you're disappointed, here's an idea that won't cost you a fortune but could deliver more of a power increase compared to the above 2 items together. This is where the ROLLING ROAD coupled with engine diagnostics come in.

The Rolling Road enables us to read the power out of the vehicle and traces any running faults under simulated road conditions.
We will give you a printed results sheet from the Rolling Road tests.

We can also check fuelling on our wideband Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR) meters and also diagnose faults not only in the engine but also in various comfort systems such as Airbags, ABS, and Climate Control.

Here are some Hints and Tips for preparation when putting your car 'on the rollers'. Any additions to this list would be appreciated.

Hints & Tips
  • Make sure your engine is in a useable condition. Trying to rolling road a tired and/or worn out old engine is a fruitless exercise.
  • Service the car beforehand. New plugs, dizzy cap, filter etc will obviously get you a better result on the rollers than dirty, worn or clogged items.
  • Eliminate any misfires or similar electrical problems. Check the oil level.
  • Make sure you've got enough fuel in the tank - you don't want to run out of petrol halfway through a session!
  • Pump your tyres up to the usual pressure for motorway driving; usually around 10 to 15% more than normal road usage.
  • Put the best petrol you can get your hands on in your tank. Shell Optimax or even your common-or-garden Super Unleaded petrol is going to give you better results than a supermarket's brand Unleaded 95.
  • Make sure the engine is up to operating temperature before you start revving the engine on the rollers. Most rolling road centres allow for a few minutes 'warm up' time, but this may not be possible if time is short or you're having a group session.
Questions & Answers

What stops the engine from overheating?
A very powerful fan is placed at the front of the car to simulate the air normally forced through the radiator. If your car has the air intake at the front, this also simulates the incoming air.

What stops the car from jumping off the rollers?
The most common way of keeping the car steady is to use straps tied to the front and rear of the car. These are secure, and are checked by the rolling road technical staff before any session takes place.

Will it damage my car?
It would be stupid to say "no" to this, as there's always a small chance that the car could be damaged during a session. However, 99.9% of any problems that cars experience whilst on the rollers would have happened on the road at some point anyway.

Is it worth getting my car rolling roaded?
If you're serious about your car - absolutely. It is also worth putting your car up on the rollers every time a modification is done to the engine to check for power increases, correct fuelling is happening, and/or to see if any new item is setup correctly. Most serious car enthusiasts have their car rolling roaded every six months or so. Some people just go out of interest; just to see how much power their engine is putting out.
